Known as one of the best areas to live in san diego, la jolla has more to offer than you’d think, and is made up of 16 unique neighborhoods that have their own charm and style.

La Jolla Shores

La Jolla Shores, or “The Shores”, is home to a variety of shops, a grocery store that is very popular with visitors and locals, and restaurants. With a long beach front park, there is an expansive beach line that is a popular walking spot from the La Jolla Beach and Tennis club and just beyond the Scripps Pier. This is a great place to swim, kayak, surf and enjoy sunsets.

As a very desirable place to live, this neighborhood has everything from cozy cottages, condominiums, and luxurious ocean front properties.

 

La jolla Village

La Jolla Village, northeast La Jolla. It is next to UTC which is a nickname for the area by the the newly expanded University Towne Center Mall. It is one of the most convenient locations by shopping, dining and movies. It is by the University of California, San Diego, La Jolla Playhouse and the La Jolla Town Square with its shops, grocery stores, pharmacy, restaurants Peets coffee as well as Starbucks and movie theaters. There are four hospitals nearby, and it has easy access to multiple freeways as well as to The Village (downtown La Jolla) and the beaches at La Jolla Shores. Housing tends to be townhomes and condominiums, although there are also some single-family detached homes.

La Jolla alta

The neighborhood sits on the southern side of Mount Soledad, and offers fantastic vistas of the sea, Mission and San Diego Bays as well as the night-time sparkling lights below. The homes largely consist of residential communities that have been developed with various amenities that may include tennis courts, swimming pools and exercise facilities. However, there are also a number of large, luxurious homes on sizeable parcels.

This neighborhood is very convenient to the Village of La Jolla's shops, restaurants and famous Cove as well as the beautiful beach at La Jolla Shores.

This neighborhood, which is just east of Torrey Pines and above La Jolla Shores offers some wonderful ocean views and night time views of lights below. It is a very convenient location close to the University of California San Diego, Scripps Institute, La Jolla Playhouse, the University Towne Center (UTC) area, hospitals, movies, The Shores and The Village. Freeways are easily accessible.

La Jolla farms

Located in the northernmost area of La Jolla and sitting above Black’s Beach and just south of the famous Torrey Pines Golf Course. This community consists largely of estate-sized homes with sizeable, beautifully manicured grounds. There is also a secured, luxurious condominium complex called Blackhorse that is located just across from the University.

A short drive downhill will bring you to La Jolla Shores with its great beach and restaurants. Just a bit farther, and you will be in The Village, where you can park and walk to shops, galleries and restaurants. The famous golf course at Torrey Pines is but five minutes away from La Jolla Farms.

 

The muirlands

A sizeable, long-established community, The Muirlands is perched on the west side of Mount Soledad in an area with many trees, where the streets wind upward to large homes and estates that vary in age and style, many with expansive views of the ocean and evening lights.

Located conveniently near schools, it is a very family-friendly area. It is but a few minutes from The Village with its' shops, galleries and restaurants as well as the restaurants and wonderful beach at La Jolla Shores.

Filled with a variety of options for shopping, there is no shortage of style with shops branching off from Prospect St. to Pearl St. It started out in the late 1800’s as a place for city dwellers a number of whom built small cottages in which they could spend time enjoying the cool ocean breezes and spend time swimming and playing in the sand.

Casual sophistication best describes today’s Village area of La Jolla, with its’ many shops, galleries, restaurants and outdoor cafes, all of which are walkable. There is a large, ocean-front park where concerts are held in the summer. The climate, the look and the atmosphere are very Mediterranean.

There are cottage, contemporary and Mediterranean style homes as well as condominiums and apartments, some of which have ocean views.

This location, on the South side of Mt. Soledad, has wonderful views of San Diego's skyline, the Coronado Bridge, the bay and the ocean. It's proximity to Pacific beach and Bird Rock allows very convenient access to its shops, restaurants, boardwalk and beaches.

country club

This is an elegant older neighborhood situated around the La Jolla Country Club which has a membership golf course with eighteen holes. While some of the homes were built during the 1920's, most date from the 1970's, and all have larger lots with beautiful landscaping. There are gorgeous golf course and ocean views.

Nearby is The Village, with its' shops, galleries and restaurants and the wide, sandy beach at La Jolla Shores. A few minutes away is the famous golf course at Torrey Pines.

This community, with its' varied styles of homes, from cottages to condominiums to large, oceanfront villas, features several beaches, including the well-known surfing area, Wind 'n' Sea Beach, all of which are a short walk away from home. Nearby are schools, several shops, a bakery and restaurants. There is convenient access to the shops, galleries and restaurants of La Jolla Village.

bird rock

This neighborhood is named for the big rock in the ocean that provides a place for seagulls and pelicans to rest. It has a small-town feel, with an area of shops, restaurants and even a bakery. There are several areas where one can surf (such as the famous Wind 'n' Sea Beach) and go diving.

Many of the houses in Bird Rock date from the late 1940's, some of which have been remodeled. There are also homes that were built more recently. The home styles range from Cottage, Spanish to Contemporary, and some have close-up ocean views.

There are schools nearby, and it is only a short drive to The Village with its shops, galleries and restaurants.

 

hidden valley

This area is on Mount Soledad's northern slope and has homes on streets that wind up the hill, many of which have views of the lush, green hills, ocean and coastline. The beach at La Jolla Shores is nearby, and The Village is a very short drive away. There is easy access to freeways.

upper hermosa

While view properties are coveted in this community as most of the streets are fairly level, it is a very pleasant, quiet area with expensive homes and beautiful landscaping. The shops and restaurants on La Jolla Boulevard in Bird Rock are nearby.

 

lower hermosa

This area is classic, vintage La Jolla which began to develop in the 1920's and continued to grow up through the early 1980's. The streets are lined with mature palm trees, and the many sidewalks make it easy to take a stroll through this lovely neighborhood which is very near the ocean.

muirlands west

Located on the west side of Mt Soledad and across from the Muirlands, this area has larger lots, with lush, mature landscaping, quiet, wide streets and beautiful ocean views. There are a variety of home styles, and there is one planned community. The schools are within walking distance..

 

soledad south

From the top of Mt. Soledad, as one descends southeastward on Mt. Soledad Road, there are quite a number of more affordable homes. There are some communities that are gated and have a number of desirable amenities. Many of these homes offer views of hills to the east, night time lights, the bay or the ocean.
